A constant source of joy, that’s what dogs are. The bond between a pet dog and its parent is like no other. They shower us with unconditional love and devotion, and are always there for us through thick and thin. Being a parent of a pup, I can vouch for the fact that nobody could understand the meaning of true, unselfish love until they own a dog.
I have many friends and relatives who want to share the unparallel joy of owning a fur baby and many of them often ask me which breed would be best for them. Being the parent of Snowy, belonging to one of the most adorable pup breeds called Maltese, I can attest that it is the most loving and wonderful companion dog with an amazingly cute disposition. White silky flowing fur combined with dark eyes and big gumdrop noses make them look like soft toys. Their show-stopping floor-length coats are hypoallergenic and do not shed. It means even if you are allergic to furry things, you can safely cuddle them without the fear of getting any allergy. Known as ‘velcro dogs’,Maltese dogs crave attention and affection and try to snuggle with their parents. Their playful, charming and adaptable nature makes them incredibly delightful. Moreover, they are often used in therapy work due to their gentle and comforting nature and can be an emotional support to people in need.
It is said that Maltese dogs are one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to 6000 BC. Though the country of their origin could not be ascertained, some think that they come from the island of Malta because of the similarity in names. An affectionate breed, a fully-grown Maltese dog weighs less than 7 pounds and radiates a charming and infectious energy. They have a unique gait described as "prancing" or "floating." This is due to their long, flowing hair and light, nimble build.
Due to the long furry coat, Maltese dogs are best suited for cold weather, but generally, they thrive well in all weather conditions. But yes, make sure to keep the ACs on during the hot months of summer, to keep them comfortable. A daily walk, playing with balls or running will usually suffice to keep them fit.
Training
Maltese dogs are extremely friendly but they can sometimes become stubborn and willful. Also, they can be defensive to unknown faces, so introduce them to new people with care so that they don’t feel threatened or encroached upon. Reward-based training can solve these problems to a great extent. Maltese dogs are extremely social and get along with other pets quite well if they are properly trained. In fact, they enjoy the company of other pets and people. One thing which you can be sure of is that Maltese dogs won’t let you get bored even for a moment. Those innocent dark eyes and tiny pink tongue are enough to melt your heart, take my words. But please don’t make them stay alone for long periods as this can lead to separation anxiety in them.
Grooming
The long white fur coat is the asset of Maltese dogs and they need daily brushing to prevent it from getting tangled and dirty. A weekly bath will be enough to keep the fur flowing and shiny. You can also get the coat trimmed regularly to maintain the desired length. If you wish to keep their coats long, I would suggest tying the hair on top of the head to prevent the hairs from entering their eyes. Keep their eyes clean and dry, and take them to a veterinarian if you notice any signs of eye infection and keep their nails trimmed.
Food & Nutrition
Two nutritionally balanced meals a day would keep the Maltese dogs fit and active. Keep a check on the amount of food to avoid obesity. It is okay to reward them with occasional treats to keep them happy but remember too many treats can lead to obesity. Consult a qualified vet to decide on a diet appropriate to their age and weight.
Health
Because they are often highly active, occasional exercise will keep these breeds healthy and happy. Maltese dogs are always bursting with energy and it is vital to keep a check on them so that they do not jump or fall from a height. Regular follow-ups with vets are required to keep untoward health problems at bay. Also do take good care of their oral hygiene as they are more susceptible to dental problems. And most importantly, give them love and tender care. Believe me, the love you’ll receive in return would be your most prized possession for the rest of your life.
